Greenwood man sentenced to 45 years in prison for 2022 murder, attempted murders

AHMAD DATERIUS EVANS

Greenwood, S.C.; September 16, 2025 – A Greenwood man will spend the next 45 years behind bars after being found guilty on charges in connection to a 2022 shooting that left one dead and three injured, 8th Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Wednesday.

Ahmad Daterius Evans, 23, was found guilty by a Greenwood County jury of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and one count of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Circuit Judge Frank R. Addy Jr. then sentenced Evans to a total of 45 years in prison. South Carolina law requires that sentences for murder be carried out day-for-day, meaning Evans will not be eligible for parole.

The conviction caps a trial that began with jury selection last Monday. Testimony began on Tuesday following opening statements and continued through the following Monday when the jury began its deliberations. The conviction comes just shy of three years to the day that Evans took the life of 25-year-old Jamison Hall and injured three others when he opened fire with an AR-15 rifle on a group of people gathered at Village at Glenhaven apartments. Hall received multiple gunshot wounds and succumbed to those wounds at Self Regional Medical Center shortly after the shooting. Three others were injured in the shooting.

Investigators arrested Evans about a week after the murder by using witness testimony and surveillance video to track Evans to and from the crime scene. Investigators executed search warrants at the residence of his mother as well as Evans’ residence, where they discovered the murder weapon underneath Evans’ bed.

Senior Assistant Solicitor Andrew Hodges, Deputy Solicitor Yates Brown, and Assistant Solicitor Madison Hoffman handled the case for the state, with assistance from 8th Circuit Investigator Dyar Archibald and 8th Circuit Victim Advocate Rhetta Smith. Evans was represented by Tristan Shaffer and Chelsea McNeill of the Greenwood Public Defender’s Office.

Solicitor Stumbo praised the work of his staff, along with Greenwood Police Department investigators, in securing the conviction and lengthy prison sentence.

“Ahmad Evans’ decision to open fire that night left one young man dead and three others wounded, forever changing the lives of multiple families,” Solicitor Stumbo said following the sentencing. “While no sentence can undo the pain he caused, today’s verdict ensures that he will not be a danger to our community for a long time. I am proud of the tireless work of my staff and our partners in law enforcement who brought Jamison Hall’s killer to justice.”
